Wodak:

Wodak,A. & McLeod, L.(2008) The role of harm reduction in controlling HIV among injecting drug users, AIDS 22(2): 581-592

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3329723/pdf/nihms-313886.pdf

Alex Wodak defends harm reduction, under attack from the World Forum Against Drugs

http://transform-drugs.blogspot.com.au/2008/09/alex-wodak-defends-harm-reduction-under.html

Just for fun I took the 2013 Global Drug Survey that supported by David Nutt and founded by Dr Adam R Winstock.

http://globaldrugsurvey.com/mixmag2013/

TLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5693305147591028842.post-36701744590939871652013-05-16T23:20:37.531-04:002013-05-16T23:20:37.531-04:00I have ther papers saved on my comp from when I wa...I have ther papers saved on my comp from when I was in college and didn't have to worry about paywalls for academic papers. I too wonder about that one alleged cannabis death. In the 2010 paper the reference is for the following paper, but its behind a paywall:
King LA, Corkery JM. An index of fatal toxicity for drugs of misuse.
Hum Psychopharmacol 2010; 25: 162–66

I would take that one cannabis death with a great deal of skepticism. Perhaps someone died of smoke inhalation converting a gas mask into a bong or something stupid like that.

As for natural vs synthetic there are different schools of thought. In one camp you have Andrew Weil and in the other Alexander Shulgin (sp?). They both make good arguments, although I think most researchers would concede plants are generally safer than pure alkaloid.

Thanks for visiting, and just for future reference I will answer most comments but am not online everyday so it make take a few days.

best,

MPMorePheenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11597869421901657527noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5693305147591028842.post-84707930585551937502013-05-14T09:33:20.179-04:002013-05-14T09:33:20.179-04:00Your are welcome MorePheen, knowledge is for shari...Your are welcome MorePheen, knowledge is for sharing.

I learnt a long time ago trying to rationalize the actions of others will send you a bit loopy. My recent research has deepened the respect I already had for the natural world; often nature makes more sense to me than people.

Back to Nutt, I'm not sure which source he got his 1 cannabis attributable death per annum from, wider sources repeatedly state a complete lack of cannabis fatalities. Obviously if you count prohibition related violence and death then there is currently a lot of harm associated with cannabis. This of course is avoidable.

Still I wonder about the source; any ideas?

TLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5693305147591028842.post-5622058637029035472013-05-13T12:11:50.737-04:002013-05-13T12:11:50.737-04:00Thanks for the links to the pdf documents. Cannabis should have been much lower, I argued above that methadone is more dangerous than heroin yet cannabis has a higher score. The BBC’s Horizon programme has followed their research and looks at the science behind the headlines. How do the brain and body react to each stimulant as it passes into the bloodstream, and what are the long-term effects of drugs relative to their classification? If the current classification should be changed in view of the latest findings, what exactly is Britain’s most dangerous drug?

My additions:

Using three criteria: 1. what the drug does; 2. how addictive it is and; 3. social consequences, Prof David Nutt et al scientifically ranked the degree of drug induced harm. His stated hopes are that this drug harm index will stimulate conversation and a re-evaluation of the 1971 system of drug classification and current policy. There is acknowledgment that this proposed ranking system is really a starting point not a final product. Of course it needs refining by vigorous debate and inclusion of measurements of harm by prohibition policies etc. At least the documentary does include the legal substances: alcohol, tobacco, solvents, alkyl nitrite, khat ranked 5th (40,000 deaths/pa), 9th (114,000 deaths/pa), 12th (50-60 deaths/pa), 19th (0 deaths/pa) and 20th (0 deaths/pa) respectively. Interestingly cannabis is ranked 11th and is attributed with 1 UK death/pa equalling ketamine ranked 6th.

A step in the right direction, not many academics and professionals are this willing to keep putting their neck on the line.

David Nutt has also successfully sought approval and funding for research to determine the viability therapeutic psylocibin for to treat depression. However, he can't find a producer to supply him as it is illegal to do so. The authorities response to this quandary, they have advised him that no one is preventing him from seeking or gaining funding. Not really addressing the real issue.

Dr Alex Wodak helped set up needle exchanges in Australia when it was still illegal. He advocates harm minimisation policies.

TLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
